Trail Conditions by Area

Longmire (2,760 ft) — Open Year-Round

The most reliable access point in the park at any season. The Trail of the Shadows (0.7 mi loop, flat), Carter Falls Trail (3.8 mi RT, 1,200 ft gain), and Rampart Ridge loop are accessible in all seasons. Upper sections of Rampart Ridge may be icy in winter. Longmire is the park's best winter and shoulder-season hiking area — 10 minutes from Refresh House to the Nisqually Entrance, 15 minutes to the Longmire trailheads. In July, Longmire is a great first stop before driving up to Paradise — the Longmire Museum and historic district are worth 30 minutes.

Paradise (5,400 ft) — July through October Peak Season

Paradise is the park's busiest area and the most trail-dense. In July, the lower Paradise trails (Alta Vista, Nisqually Vista, the lower portion of Skyline Trail) are typically clear of snow by early July. The upper Skyline Trail above Panorama Point (above ~6,200 ft) may retain snow patches in early July — passable but traction devices help. By mid-July, the full Skyline Trail loop is usually clear. Timed entry is required for the Paradise corridor on summer weekends — book at Recreation.gov well in advance, as slots fill within days of opening. Visitors arriving before 7am or after 3pm are currently exempt (verify at nps.gov/mora, as this changes year to year). Paradise receives 643 inches of snow per year on average — the most of any staffed weather station in the US.

Sunrise (6,400 ft) — Late June through Mid-September

Sunrise is the highest paved point in the park and the last road to open each year — typically late June to early July, depending on snowpack. The Sunrise Rim Trail, Emmons Vista, and lower Burroughs Mountain routes are usually clear once the road opens. The upper Burroughs routes (above 6,500 ft, toward Second and Third Burroughs) may have icy sections into mid-July. No timed entry required at Sunrise — the lot fills by ~10am on peak summer weekends, but it rarely reaches the crisis level of Paradise. Sunrise closes in mid-September, earlier than Paradise.

Carbon River (1,700 ft) — Open Year-Round

The Carbon River Road is closed to vehicles but open to foot, bicycle, and equestrian travel. The Carbon River Rainforest Loop and Carbon Glacier Trail are open year-round. In July, expect dry(ish) conditions — this corner of the park sees rain year-round but July is its driest window. The Carbon Glacier Trail to the glacier terminus (8 mi RT) is one of the park's most dramatic routes — the glacier descends to a remarkably low elevation (3,600 ft) for a US glacier, due to the heavy snowpack. In July you can walk right up to the ice.

Ohanapecosh and Stevens Canyon (southeast) — Open May–November

Stevens Canyon Road is typically open by late May or early June, connecting the Ohanapecosh area to Paradise from the east. The Grove of the Patriarchs (1.3 mi loop, flat) and Silver Falls Loop (3 mi) are accessible by May. The Ohanapecosh Visitor Center opens seasonally. This area is the park's best destination for old-growth forest — Grove of the Patriarchs has 1,000-year-old Douglas fir and cedar. In July, Ohanapecosh is a good option for hikers who want forest and river without the Paradise crowds.

Mowich Lake and Spray Park (northwest, 4,929 ft) — July–October

The Mowich Lake Road (unpaved) closes in November and reopens in late June or July. Spray Park Trail clears for wildflower hiking typically in late July — one of the park's best wildflower destinations and significantly less crowded than Paradise. Tolmie Peak Lookout (6.5 mi RT, 1,050 ft gain) offers panoramic views of Rainier's northwest face. In July, confirm road conditions before driving — the Mowich Lake Road can be rough after winter.

Gear for Variable Conditions

The most important principle for hiking at Mount Rainier: pack for conditions you might encounter, not what you're expecting. Weather at elevation changes faster than any forecast. A sunny Longmire morning can mean afternoon snow at Paradise.
