Gas Stations Near Mount Rainier: Where to Fill Up on Every Route

Mount Rainier National Park has no gas stations of any kind — zero. Fill up before you enter, regardless of which entrance you're using. The park's cell service is too spotty and the valleys too remote for running out of fuel to be a minor inconvenience. This guide covers the nearest reliable gas on each of the three main approach routes: southwest via WA-706 (Seattle/Tacoma side), northeast via SR-410 (Sunrise/White River), and southeast via US-12 (Packwood/Ohanapecosh).

Southwest Route (WA-706): Seattle, Tacoma, Eatonville → Nisqually Entrance

This is the most-used approach and covers visitors staying in Ashford, including guests at Refresh House. Coming from Seattle via I-5 → WA-7 → WA-706, your options from west to east:

• Yelm (35 miles from entrance): Multiple full-service stations including ARCO, Shell, and Chevron. Best stop if leaving from Olympia or south Puget Sound. 24-hour options available.
• Eatonville (20 miles from entrance): Shell station adjacent to Safeway — the best combination stop on the southwest approach. Fill the tank and grab groceries at Safeway simultaneously. Reliable hours, reasonably priced. This is the stop we recommend to all Refresh House guests.
• Elbe (7 miles from entrance): Small general store on WA-706 with gas. Hours are limited (typically 8am–7pm, shorter in winter). Reliable in summer; confirm before depending on it in shoulder season. If Eatonville is behind you, Elbe works as a backup.
• Ashford (2 miles from entrance): Do not count on gas here. There have historically been limited fuel options at the Ashford Inn area but hours are erratic and seasonal. Many visitors find it closed or running card-reader-only with outdated pumps. Treat any Ashford fuel as a bonus, not a plan.

Recommendation for Seattle → Nisqually visitors: Fill up before leaving the I-5 corridor (Yelm/Roy area), or at minimum at Eatonville on the way through. Don't gamble on Elbe or Ashford.

Northeast Route (SR-410): Seattle, Auburn → White River / Sunrise Entrance

SR-410 is the approach for the White River campground and Sunrise visitor center. It's a gorgeous drive, but fuel options thin out significantly once you leave Enumclaw.

• Enumclaw (30 miles from entrance): Multiple stations — Shell, ARCO, Cenex — with 24-hour options. This is the last major fuel stop. Fill up here.
• Buckley (35 miles from entrance, slightly west): On SR-410 / WA-165 junction. A couple of stations here if you're coming from the north (Orting direction).
• Greenwater (20 miles from entrance): One small general store/fuel stop at SR-410 and SE Greenwater Rd. Summer hours roughly 8am–6pm; often closed Tuesdays; winter hours highly reduced. In a pinch it works, but Enumclaw is far more reliable.
• No gas after Greenwater. The 20 miles of SR-410 from Greenwater to the White River entrance, and the 15-mile road up to Sunrise, are all park territory with no services.

Recommendation for Sunrise day trips: Fill up in Enumclaw before heading into the mountains. Sunrise road is 15+ miles of steep switchbacks above the entrance — you don't want to find out your tank is low at 6,400 ft with no cell service.

Southeast Route (US-12): Portland/Yakima → Packwood / Ohanapecosh

US-12 through the White Pass corridor leads to Packwood and the park's Stevens Canyon entrance (summer only) and Ohanapecosh visitor center.

• Morton (US-12): About 20 miles west of Packwood. Multiple gas stations with decent hours. Good stop if coming from I-5.
• Packwood (7 miles from Stevens Canyon park boundary): The main service town for the southeast approach. Multiple gas stations, open reasonable hours, competitive prices. The Packwood NAPA has diesel. Fill up here — it's your last reliable option heading into the park.
• Randle (US-12, west of Packwood): Has some fuel options; hours vary. Morton or Packwood are more reliable.

Northwest Route (SR-165 / Carbon River)

The Carbon River entrance in the park's northwest corner is the most remote, accessing a temperate rainforest on the park's lowland edge. SR-165 runs through Wilkeson and Carbonado before reaching the entrance.

• Orting or Buckley: Fill up before leaving either of these towns. There are no fuel options on SR-165 between Buckley and the Carbon River entrance.
• Carbonado and Wilkeson: Very small towns with no gas stations. Do not count on anything here.

Pro Tips: Fuel Strategy for Multi-Day Visits

• Fill to full before you leave the city. From Seattle, Eatonville (SW), Enumclaw (NE), or the south Tacoma ARCO are all better value and more reliable than anything closer to the park.
• Driving inside the park burns more gas than you expect. Rainier's roads are steep, winding, and at elevation. A trip from the Nisqually entrance to Paradise and back is ~40 miles; Nisqually to Sunrise via SR-410 is 90+ miles. Plan accordingly.
• Check hours seasonally. Elbe and Greenwater in particular have dramatically reduced hours November–April. Many small stations go to honor-system card-reader-only in winter, and pumps may not work with certain cards.

• For Refresh House guests in Ashford: We recommend filling up at the Eatonville Safeway Shell on your way in. The drive from Seattle is most efficient via WA-7 → WA-706, passing through Eatonville naturally. Stock up on groceries at Safeway at the same stop.
