Ashford is the gateway to Mount Rainier's southwest side — 2 miles from the Nisqually entrance, 45 minutes from Paradise. Packwood is the gateway to the southeast — on US-12 about an hour from Ohanapecosh, closer to White Pass and the Cowlitz Valley. Both are legitimate bases for a Rainier trip, but they suit different itineraries and travel styles. If you're coming from Seattle and want fast Paradise access, Ashford wins on proximity. If you want a larger town with more dining options and you're exploring the east side of the park, Packwood is the better fit.

Ashford: The Case For
Ashford's single biggest advantage is the 2-mile distance to the Nisqually gate — the most-used entrance to the park. From the cabin to the Longmire visitor center is 7 miles. From the cabin to the base of the Skyline Trail at Paradise is about 21 miles, typically a 45-minute drive. For visitors whose primary goal is maximizing hiking time at Paradise, there is no better base in the region.
Ashford also has Whittaker Mountaineering — the legendary gear shop founded by Lou Whittaker, the first American to summit Everest from the south route. It's the only proper mountaineering outfitter within 30 miles of the park, renting crampons, ice axes, trekking poles, and snowshoes on the spot. The shop is genuinely useful, not just a tourist attraction.
The tradeoff: Ashford is tiny. The handful of restaurants (Copper Creek Inn, a couple of casual spots) keep seasonal and often abbreviated hours. You will not find a bar open at 10pm on a Tuesday. For visitors who want to cook in a cabin kitchen and hike the next morning, this is a non-issue. For visitors who want evening entertainment options, it's a real limitation.
For remote workers and workcation guests, Ashford cabin rentals — particularly Refresh House, which has dedicated fiber internet and a proper workspace — offer something Packwood does not: a legitimate work-from-nature setup with sub-5-minute park access. See the full Ashford visitor guide for the complete picture.
Packwood: The Case For
Packwood is a real town — population ~1,000 — with a walkable main street on US-12 that has a grocery store, multiple restaurants open year-round, a hardware store, gas stations, and reliable cell service. For visitors who want the security of services around them, Packwood is more comfortable.
Packwood is also the better base for:
- Ohanapecosh (the park's southeast visitor center and Grove of the Patriarchs): ~25 minutes from Packwood, versus 1h15m+ from Ashford.
- Stevens Canyon Road (summer only): Packwood is the closest lodging to this strikingly beautiful road connecting Ohanapecosh to Paradise. The road is only open July–October; Ashford visitors use it too, but the approach from Packwood is more direct.
- White Pass Ski Area: 20 miles east of Packwood on US-12. A Packwood base lets you combine Rainier hiking in summer with White Pass skiing in winter — something Ashford can't match for distance.
- Goat Rocks Wilderness: Packwood is the primary gateway town for this spectacular wilderness area between Rainier and St. Helens. Trailheads for the PCT through Goat Rocks are 10–20 miles from Packwood.
Packwood's weakness for Rainier visitors is that it's on the less-visited side of the park. Paradise, Longmire, and the Nisqually entrance — which collectively account for the majority of park visits — are all 75+ minutes away from Packwood. If you're doing a standard Seattle weekend trip to Rainier and want to hit Paradise, Packwood adds significant drive time.
Who Should Choose Ashford
- Visitors coming from Seattle / Tacoma who want the shortest drive to Paradise
- Remote workers and workcation guests wanting fiber WiFi + fast park access (Refresh House)
- Hikers whose priority is the Skyline Trail, Spray Park, Carbon River, or other southwest/northwest park trails
- Anyone who prefers a self-catering cabin stay over a motel with dining nearby
- Weekend visitors optimizing for hiking time, not town time
- Winter visitors who want to snowshoe at Paradise or Longmire (WA-706 stays open to Longmire year-round)
Who Should Choose Packwood
- Visitors planning to focus on Ohanapecosh, Grove of the Patriarchs, or Stevens Canyon
- Winter visitors skiing White Pass and adding a Rainier snowshoe day
- Hikers targeting Goat Rocks Wilderness (PCT through Goat Rocks is world-class)
- Visitors who want a town with restaurants, a bar, and services within walking distance
- Families or groups who want the reassurance of gas stations and a grocery store in town
- Travelers coming from Portland or Yakima via US-12 for whom Packwood is a natural stop
The Multi-Day Strategy: Both Towns
If you have 3+ nights near Rainier, consider splitting your stay. The park is genuinely large — driving from the Nisqually entrance to Sunrise takes 2.5 hours on park roads. Many visitors spend their first night or two in Ashford for the Paradise/southwest side, then drive to Packwood for a night to access Ohanapecosh and Stevens Canyon before heading home. This works particularly well in summer when all park roads are open and the full loop is possible.
Day-trip logistics: from Ashford, a full park day visiting Paradise and Longmire is very comfortable. Adding Sunrise from Ashford is an ambitious full day (leave Ashford by 7am). From Packwood, a day hitting Ohanapecosh, Stevens Canyon, and Paradise is a classic summer loop.

The Verdict
Choose Ashford if your trip centers on Paradise, Longmire, and the southwest entrance — especially if you're coming from Seattle. The 2-mile park access is genuinely meaningful for early morning trailhead starts. It's also the clear choice for cabin-stay workcations.
Choose Packwood if you want a real town with services, you're exploring the southeast side (Ohanapecosh, Grove of the Patriarchs, Stevens Canyon), you're skiing White Pass, or you're approaching from Portland/Yakima on US-12.
Best of both worlds: Two nights in Ashford for Paradise access, one night in Packwood for Stevens Canyon and Ohanapecosh, with a Sunrise day trip built in via SR-410 on the way home to Seattle.
